State Government

The State of California recognizes the right of Native American tribes to self-govern and exercise inherent sovereign powers over their members and territory. On September 19, 2011, Governor Jerry Brown issued Executive Order B-10-11, which states that "it is the policy of the administration that every state agency and department subject to executive control is to encourage communication and consultation with California Native American tribes." The State will work with Native American tribes (federally and non-federally recognized) on a government-to-government basis to address issues concerning Native American tribal self-government and tribal trust resources.
